MATTHEW ROSENQUIST in LOS ANGELES

 Matthew Rosenquist sculptures

Los Angeles-based artist Matthew Rosenquist is best known for carving commentary on contemporary life out of rough-hewn wooden block. His process suggests a “take no prisoners” approach: similar in style, perhaps, to his figures snapping photos on their cell phones.

Consciously attuned to a certain street culture in common circulation both in L.A. and disseminated throughout other metropolitan centers across America - a suburbanized vernacular - Rosenquist’s work conveys a rare insight into the self-conscious construction and projection of identity and attitude while exploring the notion of social ‘position’ (as distinct from pose or posturing) with respect to place, peers, and society at large.

MATTHEW ROSENQUIST received an MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Georgia in 1998. As a visiting artist at Lux Art Institute, San Diego he participated in redefining the museum experience to make art more accessible and personally meaningful.
