Collection: MATTHEW ROSENQUIST

Los Angeles-based artist MATTHEW ROSENQUIST is best known for carving commentary on contemporary life out of rough-hewn wooden block. His process suggests a “take no prisoners” approach: similar in style, perhaps, to his figures snapping photos on their cell phones.

Consciously attuned to a certain street culture in common circulation both in L.A. and disseminated throughout other metropolitan centers across America - a suburbanized vernacular - Rosenquist’s work conveys a rare insight into the self-conscious construction and projection of identity and attitude while exploring the notion of social ‘position’ (as distinct from pose or posturing) with respect to place, peers, and society at large.
